Extra Reading Diary Post: The Heart of a Monkey

The Heart of a Monkey
It took a little longer than normal for me to find this story. Since I enjoy reading so much I like to at least find one thing that stands out to me the most. This story is a Swahili African tale. The tale is between a monkey who meets a shark. The people have built their houses in huts off a cliff. The monkey likes to sit in the tree that extends over the ocean from the cliff. The shark meets the monkey and they begin to converse about what it is like to live where they do. As they talked the monkey would feed the shark the food off of the tree. The story seems innocent at first but then takes an expected turn. The monkey begins to trust the shark. The shark invites the monkey to his home/ The monkey is skeptical but goes along. The sharks true colors are shown when he believes his evil plan to get the monkey's heart is going to work. The only reason the shark befriended the monkey was to be able to eat his heart. Just when the shark thinks he has won, the monkey out smarts the shark by saying he left his heart at home. Even though it is not possible, the shark returns the monkey home to "retrieve" his heart. The monkey returned to his tree, where he climbed high enough that the shark couldn't see him anymore. He ate and took a nap while the shark waited for his return. The monkey laughed at the shark and accused the shark for taking him as a fool. When I started this story, I had no idea where it was heading. The words monkey popped out at me because they're one of the cutest animals as well as the word heart. Being a health major I love to learn and read about almost anything to do with the body.
