Reading Diary A: Indian Stories

The Monkey and the Crocodiles
  • A mother crocodile asked her to son to get her monkey so she could eat its heart
  • The crocodile tricked the monkey to get on his back where the croc would try to drown him
  • The monkey informs the crocodile that he didn't bring his heart with him
  • The monkey tricked the crocodile into taking him back to the bank
Part II
  • The Monkey moved to another tree down the bank which had an island of ripe fruit across from it
  • The crocodile saw the monkey crossing and waited for his chance to grab the monkey
  • The monkey being smart saw what the crocodile was trying to do
  • The monkey tricked the crocodile into closing his eyes so the monkey could jump over him
How the Turtle Save Its Own Life
  • A king had a lake made for his son's to play in
  • Fish and a turtle were put in the lake
  • The sons thought the turtle was demon
  • The turtle was summoned to death
  • The turtle tricked the king into throwing him into the lake were he would be safe
The Turtle Who Couldn't Stop Talking
  • A turtle made friends with two geese
  • The geese invited the turtle to their home by carrying him on stick that he holds with his mouth
  • But the turtle fell to his death when he spoke after he was being made fun of
The Ox Who Won the Forfeit
  • A farmer bragged about his ox being strong enough to pull a 100 carts
  • The farmer spoke ill of the ox and whipped him, the ox didn't like that so he refused to move
  • The farmer apologized to his the ox
  • The next day the ox went back to town and won the money the farmer previously lost
The Quarrel of the Quails
  • A fowler was catching the quails in the woods
  • The quails wise leader told the others to lift the net and everyone fly off while leaving the net on a thorn bush
  • The plan worked and worked until one day when the quails couldn't stop arguing
  • While they argued the fowler caught them and sold them for a good price
The Foolish, Timid Rabbit
  • A rabbit became scared with the thought that the world would fall apart
  • A monkey hit the rabbit in the head sending him running with the thought of the world falling apart
  • Many rabbits and other animals joined him in his run until a lion stopped them to know what was going on
  • The lion made the rabbit return to the place where he was hit and see the source of the sound, to find out it was only coconut.
The Banyan Deer
  • A Deer King was perfect, he was king of the banyan deer
  • There was another herd of deer ruled by a king called the Monkey Deer
  • A king near by loved to eat deer and would send the people of his kingdom to go hunt the deer for them
  • The people of the kingdom didn't want to go hunt for him so they built him a park and put the deer there
  • The deer were being killed and would take turns from each herd to be eaten
  • The king allowed the deer kings to live
  • The banyan king went in the place of monkey deer to die
  • The king was impressed with his kindness and said he would stop hunting the deer
The Princes and the Water-Sprite
  • A king and queen had 3 sons. The Moon Prince, the Sun Prince, and the Prince of the Stars
  • The queen asked for the kingdom to go to the youngest son which the king refused
  • The brothers set off into the woods. where they met the Water-Sprite
  • The Sprite allowed those that can answer her question correctly they could keep their lives
  • The Sun and Moon Prince answered it wrong and were carried off
  • The Star Prince got the answer right and the Sprite allowed him to bring the Sun Prince back
  • The Sprite allowed them to all be released and they lived in the woods until the king died
The King's White Elephant
  • A group of carpenters lived on a river back and would cut down the trees to make boats
  • An elephant had a splinter that the carpenters removed
  • To repay the debt the elephant worked for them, then brought his son who was all white to work with him since he was getting old.
  • A king saw the elephant and took him home for his own palace
The Ox Who Envied the Pig
  • An Ox, Big Red and his brother Little Red, lived on a farm, working and eating straw
  • The farmers daughter was about to be married so the lazy pig was fattened until the wedding where he was eaten.
  • Little Red was envious of the pig until he saw that he was killed
The Crab and the Crane
  • There was a drought and the pond the fish live in was very low.
  • A crane offered to help the fish by taking them to another pond on his back
  • The fish refused because they thought they would be eaten, the crane offered to take one of the fish to the pond to see if the other pond existed.
  • The pond did exist however the crane would carry the fish into the woods and eat them until he ate all the fish.
  • After all the fish were eaten a crab was left. The crane carried to the crab into the woods, and tried to eat him
  • The crab pinched the cranes head off
The Girl Monkey and the String of Pearls
  • A king called his family to go swimming with him
  • The queen left her pearls with her servant but not before a girl monkey saw her put them away and she desired to take him.
  • The monkey took the pearls and hid them in the tree
  • The chief guard hung a bunch of brightly colored beads from the trees and the other monkeys took them
  • The girl monkey showed off her pearls
  • The guard caught the monkey and returned the queen's pearls

The Three Fishes
  • Three Fishes lived in river, their names were Thoughtful, Very Thoughtful, and Thoughtless
  • They left their river and went to river where there were many fishermen
  • Thoughtful and Thoughtless were caught in a net and Very Thoughtful had to save them
  • The two fishes escaped with their lives where they returned to their home river as 3
The Tricky Wolf and the Rats
  • A pack of rats had a leader that was a big rat
  • A wolf wanted to eat the rats
  • Every time the rats would leave the wolf would eat the last rat and pretend that nothing had ever happened
  • The chief rat caught the wolf in the act of eating them and made the other rats bite the wolf until he died.
