Extra Reading: Brothers Grimm(LibriVox)

The Frog Prince
  • A princess went on a walk in the woods by herself
  • She had her favorite gold ball but it rolled away while playing with it
  • The ball rolled into the spring that was too deep to see the bottom
  • A frog heard her cries and asked her what her problem was
  • The frog said if the princes would love him and let him live with her, he would go down and get her gold ball.
  • The princess thought the frog wouldn't be able to leave the spring so she agreed to the deal.
  • The princess became so over joyed that she took the ball and ran home without the frog
  • The next day the frog appeared at her front door and the princess had no choice but to live up to her end of the deal.
  • The next day the frog leapt away but returned at night
  • The day after rather than waking to a frog the princess woke to a handsome prince
  • The curse that was set on prince was broken when the princess agreed to love him
  • The two moved back to his castle and lived happily ever after
Rapunzel
  • A man and woman wanted a child.
  • There was a big garden behind their house but it was surrounded a wall but a enchantress lived beyond the wall
  • The woman saw a plant Rampion(Rapunzel) and yearned for it.
  • The husband climbed the wall and brought her the plant
  • In his attempt to get more, the enchantress caught him
  • To spare his life, the witch said he must bring her the child that the couple was going to have
  • The child was names Rapunzel, and she was the most beautiful child.
  • At 12 years old, the witch locked her in a tower
  • She had hair as fine as spun gold. She would allow her hair to go out the window and the witch would climb up the tower
  • A prince one day rode by and heard her song but couldn't find a way into the tower
  • Each day the prince would bring her a silk cloth and she wove a ladder
  • Gothel was angered by the prince coming up so she cut Rapunzel's hair off
  • She cast Rapunzel into the desert to not be found
  • The prince climbed the hair to find the witch, he jumped from the tower becoming blind by throns
  • The prince roamed until one day Rapunzel found him, she cried, the tears went into his eyes and he could see again.

The Straw, the Coal, and the Bean
  • A piece of coal, straw and a bean fell on the floor from a poor woman's dinner
  • The three decided to set out on a journey to a new country
  • They came to a brook. The straw laid across the banks and had everyone walk across.
  • The coal panicked causing the straw to break, the coal fell into the water dying
  • The bean stayed behind, and couldn't help but laugh until it burst.
  • A tailor walking by saw the bean and stitched it back together
The Mouse, The Bird and The Sausage
  • A mouse, a bird and a sausage agreed that they will live together in a house
  • They lived in harmony, the mouse got the water, the sausage cooked and the bird got wood
  • The bird met another bird in the woods, the new bird told him to stop doing all the work for the house
  • The next day the bird refused to go get the wood
  • The sausage went to go get the meet but was eaten by a dog
  • The mouse fell into the pot of food dying
  • The bird drown trying to put out a fire
The Travelling Musicians
  • A farmer had a donkey that was faithful but too old
  • The donkey decided to become a musician.
  • He met a dog a long the way and he agreed to join the donkey on his journey
  • They met a cat who joined their journey
  • The group then met a chicken who too joined them
  • They decided to camp in the woods for the night when the rooster saw a flame
  • They went toward the flame to see it was a group of robbers
  • The group all started "playing their music"
  • They crashed through the window scaring the robbers off and they ate their food
  • One brave robber went to see what was going on in the house only to be attacked by all the animals
  • The animals got to keep the house and lived there
Clever Elsie
  • A man had a daughter they called Clever Elsie
  • Her parents wanted her married off
  • A man, Hans, wanted to marry her until he found out she wasn't smart
  • Her parents sent her to cellar to get beer but she noticed a pick ax hanging from the ceiling
  • She cried over the thought that her future son could die if the ax fell
  • The maid was sent to see why Elsie hadn't returned. She heard her reasoning and cried with her
  • The boy was sent next and cried as well with them
  • The mother and father as well
  • Hans went down to see where everyone had went to
  • After hearing her reasoning, Hans agreed to marry Elsie
  • Elsie had fallen asleep before doing her work
  • Hans found her and tied a net and bells around her feet
  • She didn't know if she was herself. She knocked on the door, asked if Elsie was in and Hans said yes so she ran door to door asking to never be seen again.
Briar Rose
  • The queen and king wanted a child
  • The queen saw a fish on the river bank that had jumped out of the water
  • If the queen returned the fish back to the water, the fish would grant her wish
  • Soon the couple had a baby girl. And the queen gave her fairies
  • The fairies brought the baby gifts making her good
  • The 12th uninvited witch crashed the party wearing black and yelled at the king and queen.
  • She cursed the baby that on her 15th birthday she will die by a spindle
  • Rather than dying the other fairies gave her the gift of not dying but sleeping for a 100 years
  • The king had all spindles in the kingdom burned
  • On her 15th birthday, she found a spindle in the palace, and was killed by it
  • Everyone else as well fell asleep
  • A thick bush grew over the castle.
  • Many princes attempted to cut through to save Briar Rose but none succeeded
  • 100 years later, a prince went to accept the challenge
  • He found Briar Rose and kissed her. She awoke as well as the rest of the castle
  • The prince and Briar Rose were then married.
