Picked on, then Picked up

An example of bullying. Source
Why do I get picked on every day? I ask quietly to myself. Every day someone calls me stupid, shoves me into the wall or makes fun of how tall I am. I can't help it that I am 6' 2" tall. All the other guys are short. Mom said there is nothing wrong with me and forces me to go to school anyways. No matter how many times I ask to not go...

"Move freak" is what I hear as I am walking to class, I hear that about four times a week. That is nothing new so I let it slide off of me and keep walking. Today, when I sat in my seat I noticed that something isn't right. My pants feel sticky where I sat. I stand up and realize someone put glue all over my seat. I hear everyone laughing as I run out to the office to call my mom to come get me. As I sit and wait on my mom I notice a girl that is in some of my other classes is staring at me. I stare back, but she doesn't look away. Instead, she approaches me.

"Why do you put up with everyone being mean to you?" I believe her name is Bailey asks. "I don't know. I just let it happen, because it's what I know," I say. "Well, stop," she simply says. I look at her as if she has grown a second head.

"Why do you care if they pick on me?"
"Because it is not nice or fair. You should tell them to stop, and use your size to intimidate them."
"But my size is why they make fun of me," I say.
"They're just jealous that you are tall and that all the girls have a crush on you."

Now, I am absolutely stunned by what she is saying. This is the first real female contact I have had outside of class in a long time. My face has shock written all over it and my mind is going a thousand miles a minute of this new discovery.

"Every time someone is mean to you or says something tell them to shut up or go away. It is time to stand up for yourself," Bailey says.
The last thing I want is to be mean like everyone has been to me. I know though that something has to change. What I didn't realize was that every time someone was mean to me, I built up a "shell." Everything just bounced off me after a while and I had become harden to other kids.

The next day, "GET AWAY FROM ME!" I yell at yet again another person who tries to shove me into the wall. This pattern continues for about two days before everyone began to see me differently. Suddenly, girls would talk to me, other guys wanted to be my friend, and those who didn't want to be my friend feared me.

I didn't want people to fear me but I did want to be respected. I finally got the respect that I wanted. I also got the girl as his girlfriend that gave me the confidence to stand up for myself.

Author's Note:
I chose to use the story How the Tortoise Got Its Shell. The tortoise in the story was sent on an errand to return only to be locked out of the castle he was supposed to be in. While on the errand, he became drunk and showed up late to the castle. I made my character tall like the tortoise to have some similarity in stories. He was carrying a great weight on his back. The weight crushed him. Time passed before anyone had discovered the tortoise. He had formed a hard shell. I used the concept of him gaining a shell and made it a positive thing in my story. I even used the world shell in this story to symbolize and tie together the two stories I wasn’t sure where I was going with my story at first. I knew I had shell to work with. I tried writing a different way with a little more dialogue between characters. I broke my paragraphs up differently as well. I thought it would make it easier to read. I went back and added some details. I also tried to get to the point of my story using fewer words. I really started to like this story after I wrote it. I liked the general idea of it. It seemed better than majority of my other stories that I have written.

Story Retelling Week 13: A Cheerleader Murderer.

A bloody knife. Source
Things were going well Gracie, she was student body president, she was the head cheerleader, and had the star quarterback boyfriend. While she had everything one could possibly want, she was the nicest person around. Everyone loved her and it was impossible to hate her. Which made everyone wonder how Gracie was being arrested for murder.

"AHHHHHH" was heard all throughout the entire women's locker room and the gym. Girls running, screaming, and blood was on Gracie's hands. Gracie was obviously the suspected killer. She was the last person to see Jennifer alive and she literally had her blood on her hands. Gracie panicked and ran as well but was caught and cuffed before she could fully understand what had happened.

The day seemed like a normal one, Gracie rode to school with her boyfriend Kyle, ate lunch with her friends, and was on her way to cheer practice. But not before she accidentally ran into a group of kids that Gracie would never hang out with. "Watch out slut" a girl with dark hair and bright eyes rimmed with dark eyeliner yelled. Gracie apologized over and over. The girl who yelled was named Allie, and Allie and Gracie had a past. They were once friends but ended when Gracie became a cheerleader. Allie never forgave Gracie for changing her friends.

The day before Gracie had a bad day. Everything for her was going wrong. She argued with the co captain, she forgot her homework, and was sent to the office for her outfit being to "revealing." The day of murder things were better until then.

Gracie begged for someone to prove she was innocent as she was dragged into the police car. A day later, Gracie woke up in her holding cell next to Allie and the co captain Meredith of the cheer team. In shock Gracie asks how they got there. The other 2 girls were also suspected of being the murderer.

The knife that was used was found in Allie's locker but Meredith had a motive to pin this murder on Gracie. Meredith was the one of the only people to hate Gracie. She wanted her cheer spot as captain. Allie doesn't know how the knife got in her locker. She opened it after school for it to fall on the floor in front of everyone.

No one suspected the killer. It felt like a slap to the face for the entire community. A girl who is innocent is dead because one person wanted them to be dead. Finger prints were found on the knife. 3 pairs. But only 2 of them belong to the 3 sitting in the cell. Clearly there is another person who is not in the cell that should be.

An overheard conversation in the boys locker room reveals who the killer is. It turns out the victim was the wrong person. The murder went into the locker with one person in mind. They saw who they thought was the intended victim. They stabbed the knife over and over, when Gracie walked in to witness it. The killer had on a mask and was in all black. The killer jumped when Gracie screamed, Gracie tried to wrestle the knife away, but ended up being covered in blood. The knife and the murder disappeared. The murder saw an open locker and threw the knife in there. Meredith was still fuming from her fight with Gracie the day before and Allie was bitter about her new popularity.

The girls were discussing the situation when the jail doors flew open and their jaws dropped to see none other than Kyle being brought in restrained in hand cuffs. Kyle was kicking and screaming "IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE YOU" at Gracie. Gracie confused as to what was going on, heard Kyle yelling that she was supposed to be the one killed because he couldn't handle having her as a girlfriend anymore. The girls were released but Gracie was still unsure what Kyle couldn't handle about their relationship. She was just happy to see herself as free again but sad to know someone had died because of her..

Author's Note: This was easily the most unusual story I have written yet. I took the story of The Queen Bee. In this story a dwarf sets out into the world to find his 2 older brothers. The 3 set out and are taken to castle where they are tested to find hidden pearls. The 2 older brothers tried to cause destruction while on their journey. The king of the castle makes the one who wins the challenge do another challenge before he can wed his daughter. They have to figure out which one is the youngest to marry. My story was a huge stretch of what the original was. My story was inspired by the part of the original story that the winner of the challenge had to figure out which of the daughters was the youngest. In mine they had to figure out which if any of the girls had murdered the girl in the locker room. I decided to take a turn with my writing and try something new. I have written lots of good cookie cutter endings. I just like the mystery of this one.

The Queen Bee

Two brothers went out in the world and were foolish with their ways. They had a younger brother who was dwarf that went in search of his brothers. On their journey back home, the two older brothers kept wanting to kill the innocent creatures they came across. They came to a castle where an old man showed them a great feast and a bed for the night. The man took the eldest soon, told him there were a 1000 pearls hidden and that he was to find them all for the king to wed his daughter. He only found 100 the next brother found another 100. The dwarf set out but stopped to cry because the task was hard. The ants he had saved earlier stopped to help him find the rest of the pearls. The next task, was to retrieve the key for the princess's room at the bottom of the lake. Two ducks went and fished the key out of the lake for him. The king had 3 daughters, and the last task was to pick one between the three. Each had eaten something different and he had to choose the one that ate the honey. The Queen bee who the dwarf saved earlier flew in and checked to see which had the honey. The dwarf knew which daughter was the youngest that had the honey and who to choose. The spell that had been place on everyone turning them into stone was broken and everyone had awoken. The dwarf son married the youngest princess, and became king once the king died and the brothers married the other sisters

Thoughts and Comments

As much as I hate to read it or sometimes give it because I feel rude, constructive criticism can be so helpful. I like getting it because it makes my work better, but it also gives me ideas when I am stuck writing. It also helps take out or correct things that don't make sense. Most of the comments I have received have been nice, complementing my work and pointing out some things that would make it better. When I comment on others I try to put one thing that could make their writing better.

Storytelling Week 5: Wooden toys to Royalty

A wooden toy. Source
A king, his queen, and their beautiful daughter Eliza, lived in wealth and luxury. Their daughter only would drink from only golden cups, the queen only wore the most expensive jewels, and the king would only have the rarest most expensive beer with all his meals. The family has taken to the lifestyle nicely but, it hasn't always been this rich.

A poor man would send his small daughter on to the streets with the toys he has built in his carpentry shop behind their house. The poor family couldn't afford to have a store like everyone else in town, so he built from his home. He knew it was difficult for people to tell Eliza no so she worked all day. The family used the money the daughter earned on food, supplies for the toys, and trying to keep everyone clothed. Some nights the only person to get to eat is the family was Eliza, the man would be damned before he saw his daughter go to bed hungry. The family might not have had much but they had each other.

One day while Eliza was out on the streets selling her pretty toys, a boy around the same age approached her with fascination. Eliza being as friendly as she was stuck her hand right out and said " hi there, I'm Eliza," the boy returned her hand shake with a small "Eric." Although he was more shy than Eliza, he insisted Eliza go play with him back at his big house. Eliza knew better than to leave, but she loved making new friends. She picked up all the toys, hid them in an alley an ran off with Eric. Not 10 minutes after the children had left , her father came back to check on her progress and bring her lunch. Immediately Eliza's father knew something was wrong. He screamed "ELIZA," he asked everyone on the streets had he seen his precious daughter but no one had. Until an old lady that sat across the street from Eliza everyday and watched her, spoke up and said "I saw her and a boy run off toward the castle." The man absolutely determined to find her ran to the castle.

The kids were inside playing their little hearts out. They were in the middle of hide and seek when they heard a commotion outside at the door. Eliza saw her dad arguing with the guards. The guards wouldn't let her father in. Eliza waved to her daddy yelling "hi daddy!" Once the castle confirmed it was in fact in her father, he was let in to wait in the throne room. He admired the beautiful chairs in awe of the details they held. "Daddy!" Eliza yelled at the entrance of the room only to be trailed by the king, the queen and Eric. "I had so much today daddy, and look the king looks just like you!" How the detail was overlooked for so long was beyond the man. But immediately everyone in the room noticed the similarities and became very still.

The man knew he his father had another son but was not able to keep him because he was too poor to take care of two children. His brother was never found. The king married a princess making him the new king of the kingdom.  After sitting down and discussing the details of the situation, the man and the king agreed they were in fact brothers. The king declared a parade to be held in honor of his new found family members. The family moved into the castle no longer wanting to be apart. "We have been apart too long brother, come live here" said the king.

Sadly 6 months after the family moved in, the king and queen went on a trip but not return. Their ship never returned and was lost at sea. Automatically by default the man was now the new king, his wife the queen, and Eliza a princess. While the man had no idea how to be king and was mourning his brother he took the throne with honor while taking in Eric as a new son. As time passed they became accustomed to living in luxury. The king would only drink the rarest beer, the queen only wore the finest jewels, and Eliza only drank from golden cups.

Author's Notes: I got my underlying idea of my story from the story The Golden Goose. In the original story the mother is poor with two children. A goose whose feathers were made of gold and were worth money. The daughters were supposed to sell the feathers for money for living. The mother becomes too greedy and ruins the goose's feathers. In my story I decided to keep a couple details the same but I wanted the family to find a way to get out of their situation. I like how the story began and ended the same.

Storytelling Week 4: The Magic Diamond

It was another boring day in the palace as the Princess wandered around her home in search for entertainment. She painted with the royal painter, she cooked with the chef, and finally she asked the royal seamstress to teach her to sew out of desperation for something to do. Nothing could bring her joy. She contemplated what else there is do, but still had come up with nothing.

After being bored for so long she was struck with an idea. She decided to get into some mischief. The Princess started by playing simple tricks on the palace workers like hiding behind corners and jumping out scaring them. The palace magician had been following her on her trip through the castle. Once he saw what she had been doing, he started casting spells on the workers so they couldn't move or he made objects fall behind them. The Princess thought she had magical powers. She was so overwhelmed with excitement from the new discovery she tripped and fell but was caught by something unexpected.

The magician had cast a spell on the Princess that froze her on the spot which stopped her from hitting the ground entirely. The Princess saw the magician cast the spell. That act revealed that he, not the Princess was the one doing all the work. The Princess became sad with this news. Now, the magician felt remorse because the Princess had tears welling in her eyes from the realization of not being able to do magic. The magician came up with a plan to cheer her up. He enchanted a small diamond on a necklace. When the Princess has the necklace on she will be able to do magic. This gift sent the Princess into an excited frenzy. "However, if you do more evil than good you'll turn into an old hag!" said the magician.

The Princess with great excitement once again took off with her necklace helping. She started to use the magic by helping the palace staff do their jobs just happy to have magic. The Princess looked out the window while she dusted with the royal housekeeper. She longed to go outside because she doesn't get to leave the palace often. She dropped her duster and headed for the front door to her new adventure. She knew what to expect for the most part but was stopped when she noticed a handsome young boy doing labor in a field not far from the palace. The Princess had a big character flaw; she was incredibly shy. She couldn't talk to him without turning bright red and running away. So she stood at a distance staying hidden using her magic necklace to make the load the young boy was carrying lighter. While staring at the boy she heard a noise that caught her attention. She noticed all the evil happening outside the palace. Mean people were stealing, fighting each other, and she saw others getting bullied and picked on. She came up with a plan. She started using her magic powers to seek revenge on their wrong doings. She would cause those stealing to trip so they were caught. A pot on a high building fell on the two people who were fighting because the Princess saw causing the pot to fall as the best idea to stop the fighter without getting involved. For those being picked on, she made a fountain spray the bullies with water which made them run away.

The next day she went out of the palace to see what her magic workings had done, but of course she wanted to see the young boy again. At first she saw all things going well. The young boy looked handsome as ever, and the crime had gone down. She finally built up the courage to speak to the boy. She had never been allowed to date and saw this as her chance to find true love. She called to the boy, "Good day!" but suddenly,"SMACK" the Princess fell to the ground. A thief was running away from the house he had just stolen a box of jewelry from and smacked right into her. She became so angry that she used her magic to have a rock smash him in the head. That was the final evil doing she was able to do because the next moment her magic necklace broke and she turned into a hag. Even though the Princess was helping others by stopping the acts of the bad people, she wasn't helping anyone do anything positive. She needed the balance of doing good and evil acts. Yes, what she was doing was good for one party but she needed to do good for both parties too.

The Princess was shocked the change had actually happened. She took off toward her home with hopes of having the spell reversed. She was looking back from where she came while running back to the palace when she smacked right into the handsome boy. He apologized profusely and assisted her up. Ashamed, she hid her face from the boy and scrambled from his grasp. The King banished the Princess from the palace. She hid in a tower too ashamed to show her face. She called to the magician for help but he did warn her what would happen. "I will return you back to your normal state in two years. Until the time has passed you must live with how you are!" said the magician. The Princess wept during her time locked away in a tower. There wasn't much for her to do while she waited. The only thing that made her wait less boring was her one and only window. She could look over the land below her. She noticed that she could see the handsome boy from her tower. She watched him to pass the time until the magician came back for her. A month had passed in the Princess's waiting. The waiting game continues for the Princess hag.

Author's Note: I chose to use the story The Green Jewel. In the original story, the prince is bored but runs into the palace scribe. I wanted the magician in my story to be similar to the scribe in the original story. To entertain the prince the scribe gives the prince the idea to go out on the lake with a group of women in a boat. The women were to row the boat and while doing this one of the women loses her prized necklace in the water. The scribe parts the water so she able to retrieve her necklace. The necklace and the magic gave me the idea to make the diamond necklace the princess in my story receives be enchanted with magic powers. I also wanted keep the main character
royalty and in the same emotional state that the original story had. The original story didn't have a very good ending. The girl got her necklace back and that was the end. I knew going into my story I wanted it to not end on such a good note but I also wanted my story to have a cliffhanger.

Style Brain Storming: Beauty Shop of the Gods

Topic: My storybook will be about drama in a beauty salon and spa for the Greek gods and goddeses. I want the stories to be told from all the character's point of view. I'd like for it to be a drama with all of them gossiping. I want to use characters like Psyche from Apuleius: Psyche's Beauty. Her story is the drama that my story is going to need. I would like to have the story to be based around the goddess Aphrodite, and her love affairs in the story of Aphrodite. I'll use the story of Adonis and Aphrodite to incorporate a mortals from Ovid's Metamorphoses. I want the story to be like if the reader was watching a reality television show. I believe I will be able to find enough stories on love and drama to fit in my story book.

1. Bibiliography:Apuleius: Psyche's Beauty , from The Golden Asse, Lucius Apuleius, Late 2nd century AD.
2. Bibilography: Ovid's Metamorphoses, from the Ovid's Metamorphoses, translated by Tony Kline, 2000.

Possible Styles:
Character point of view: I like the idea of the story being told completely from the characters. From experience I connect to the story much better when I read. I feel like a lot more detail is going to coming directly from the characters. I want as much drama as possible while still making the story seem believable.
Television show: I can make this story seem like they are on a television show. The characters can begin in the beauty shop but end up taking it further to settler their drama on a show like Maury. Maury is all about drama, which is exactly what my story is going to need. The show can be told from Maury's point of view then it will end on his show.
The point of view of an observer: I think making this story come from someone who is unbiased and telling what they see would be classic. Being a sassy and smart mouth kind of person, the person or object speaking would have very sarcastic way of retelling what everyone is saying.
Commentators: I spend almost everyday watching sports. So why not have all the drama unfold in the beauty shop being told by two sport commentators. This will differ from the object point of view because that will be an insider of the shop that sees it every day. The commentator will be giving play by plays completely from the outside. As opposed to the insider in the shop that will just be adding in their comments to the characters.
